{"id":113,"date":"2013-12-02T22:48:58","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T03:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yogicrowescholarship.org\/?p=113"},"modified":"2013-12-02T22:48:58","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T03:48:58","slug":"2013-grant-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.yogicrowescholarship.org\/?p=113","title":{"rendered":"2013 Grant Recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the beginning of the Yogi Crowe Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., 87 enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians have received a total of $218,794.00.\u00a0 The graduate students who received funding for 2013 include:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Barbara \u201cSunshine\u201d Parker <\/i><\/b>is a student attorney practicing law this semester. She works with low income individuals and juveniles.\u00a0\u00a0 With her concentration in Advocacy and Dispute Resolution, Sunshine recently negotiated a positive settlement for her first client.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0In May 2014, she will receive her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University Of Tennessee College Of Law.\u00a0 She was named one of 10 student members of the Hamilton Burnett American Inn of Court and recently completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination and will be applying for the North Carolina Bar in January 2014.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Lori Reed<\/i><\/b> a graduate student at Western Carolina University, is pursuing her Masters in Art Education.\u00a0 Earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Tennessee, she participated in the Study Abroad Program spending a semester at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.\u00a0 Lori hopes to work in our local school system after obtaining her Masters Degree.\u00a0 She is the daughter of Frances Long Reed and the late William D. Reed of Wolftown.\u00a0 Lori has two daughters, Dayini and Ayosta Lossie.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Ashford Nathaniel Smith <\/i><\/b>is the<b><i> <\/i><\/b>son of Janice Wilnoty and Rod Cooper of Cherokee.\u00a0 He is currently in the Masters of Public Administration Program with a concentration in Public Finance at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.\u00a0 He is a former graduate of the University of Tennessee and a former trainer for the Tennessee Volunteers Football Team. \u00a0Ashford recently was hired as the Assistant Equipment Manager for the inaugural football season for the University\u2019s football team.\u00a0 Go Niners!<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Megan Smith,<\/i><\/b> a first time recipient, is the daughter of Paul and Punkin Smith from the Birdtown Community.\u00a0 She is attending Middle Tennessee State University in pursuit of Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology.\u00a0 During her undergraduate work at East Tennessee State University, Megan was able to intern with several Tribal programs such as Heart to Heart (Child Advocacy Center) and Analenisgi.\u00a0 She describes her experience as awesome and says \u201cI am so grateful to have worked with such great staff.\u201d\u00a0 After obtaining her Masters Degree, she hopes to continue her studies in Counseling Psychology at the doctoral level.\u00a0 She plans to focus on familial relationships, diversity and intergenerational trauma and the effects it has on mental health disorders and coping skills.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Catcuce \u201cCoche\u201d Tiger <\/i><\/b>is in his final year at Western Carolina University, and will complete his Masters of Arts Degree in American History with a Certification in Cherokee Studies.\u00a0 He received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from Haskell Indian Nations University.\u00a0 Coche is currently employed at Cherokee Choices and his wife Katie also works for the Tribe in the Environmental and Natural Resources Department.\u00a0 They have a seven month old son, Catcuce Micco and they live in the Wolftown Community.\u00a0 He is the son of Judy Gloyne Tiger of Cherokee and Michael Tiger from the Seminole Reservation in Hollywood, Florida.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A graduate of the Right Path Leadership Program, Coche hopes to apply his education in some capacity for the Eastern Band of Cherokee and the people of the Qualla Boundary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the beginning of the Yogi Crowe Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., 87 enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians have received a total of $218,794.00.\u00a0 The graduate students who received funding for 2013 include: Barbara \u201cSunshine\u201d Parker is a student attorney practicing law this semester.
